Revolution Flag Foundation will be holding a press conference to announce an initiative to remember heroes of World War II from Detroit. The foundation will be unveiling the restored memorial to PFC Herman Hardstein and the announcement of the initiative. The initiative, “Detroit Heroes Project” will work to restore 10-20 memorials across Detroit that are dedicated to highly decorated World War 2 soldiers that lost their lives in the line of duty. The memorials that were dedicated in the time period of 1950 to the 1960’s were part of an effort by the city to recognize the sacrifices of soldiers from Detroit the Arsenal of Democracy. The parks where the memorials were placed bear the names of the fallen soldiers. Michael Soviak said, “This project is about ensuring that the memory of these Detroit heroes continues into the future”. The memorials that were erected by the city included a plaque that displayed the name of the soldier and the place and year in which they lost their lives as well as a flagpole. The initiative will work to raise funds to restore the memorials and to replace the old flagpoles along with the restoration of the plaque. The target for completion of the project is the spring of 2016. The project will also look for volunteers to come to the parks on the day of the event of the unveiling of the memorials to help clean up the parks. In the spring of 2016 the initiative will hold a one day event where the flags will be raised at the memorials along with cleanup efforts at the parks.
